Modern Buddhism
Everybody welcome

What is the Mind?
Day & time Wednesdays | 6:30 - 7:45 pm
Dates 11/03, 18/03, 25/03, & 01/04
With meditation teacher and Buddhist monk, Gen Kelsang Jangchub
For many, the mind is a fascinating enigma. While some scientists and psychologists believe it’s simply the brain or a function of it, Buddha’s teachings offer a different perspective. He describes the mind as a formless continuum, which can be understood scientifically with logic and also through experience in meditation and daily life. This short course explores the mind’s nature and guides participants in meditating on the nature of mind, helping to foster insight, clarity, and mental freedom. You can find more information and details of the class topics on the booking page.
We encourage you to book early if you plan to attend classes, as seating is limited.

Stress and frustration can be overwhelming emotions. Also, many different things in modern life trigger us, making us feel stressed, annoyed and sometimes angry. In this short practical course we begin exploring what anger is, why we get angry and how it harms us. Then, using simple Buddhist psychology, we explore how to respond differently to challenging people and situations and discover freedom and flexibility in life situations that would normally trigger the opposite reactions. In his words: “Modern Buddhism is a special presentation of Buddha’s teachings that retains their original meaning while making them easy to understand and practise in modern society.” — from the book Modern Buddhism.

The teachings of Modern Buddhism are based on the collected works of modern day meditation master, and internationally renowned author, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso (1931 - 2022).
The classes in Oxford are taught by English Buddhist monk Gen Kelsang Jangchub, a student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche for many years.
Gen Jangchub is the resident teacher at Akanishta Kadampa Buddhist Centre in Cheltenham where he teaches the Teacher Training Programme as well as weekly classes in Cheltenham and the Cotswolds. He presents Buddha's teachings in a clear and practical way, making Buddha's teachings and the practice of meditation accessible to everyone. -
Classes are offered seated on chairs and include an initial relaxation meditation exercise, a talk on a specific topic or theme, a guided meditation and time for discussion and questions at the end. The classes are structured in this way to facilitate understanding the class topic, using this understanding in meditation and applying it in daily life to help solve life’s problems and challenges.
People often ask if they should wear special clothing or bring anything with them. There’s no specific advice about clothing. Participants often say they feel most comfortable in loose fitting clothes in summer and warmer clothes in winter. You don’t need to bring anything with you, although some people take notes to be able to review the class material afterwards.
There is a small shop at classes with a selection of books and guided meditations. A more extensive collection of books, guided meditations, Buddhist art and prayers is available from Tharpa Publications.
