Meditation & Modern Buddhism in Oxford

Everybody welcome

Modern Buddhism is the presentation of Buddha’s ancient teachings in a way that is clear, practical, and directly applicable to modern daily life – regardless of a person’s background, culture, or personal beliefs.

This special presentation was pioneered over 40 years by meditation master, and widely respected author, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche (1932-2022). His books and writings, teachings around the world, and guidance over many years have inspired a worldwide community to find answers to questions and solutions to problems in daily life through putting Buddha’s teachings into practice.

We’re delighted to offer a series of short Modern Buddhism courses in Oxford starting in the spring and summer. You can book for a course or individual classes. The courses delve into key themes and topics from Buddha’s teachings, aiming to be engaging, practical and relevant to everyday life.

What is the Mind?

Day & time Wednesdays | 6:30 - 7:45 pm
Dates

With meditation teacher, Buddhist monk Gen Kelsang Jangchub

For many, the mind is a fascinating enigma. While some scientists and psychologists believe it’s simply the brain or a function of it, Buddha’s teachings offer a different perspective. He describes the mind as a formless continuum, which can be understood scientifically with logic and also through experience in meditation and daily life. This short course explores the mind’s nature and guides participants in meditating on the nature of mind, helping to foster insight, clarity, and mental freedom. You can find more information and details of the class topics on the booking page.

Stress and frustration can be overwhelming emotions. Also, many different things in modern life trigger us, making us feel stressed, annoyed and sometimes angry. In this short practical course we begin exploring what anger is, why we get angry and how it harms us. Then, using simple Buddhist psychology, we explore how to respond differently to challenging people and situations and discover freedom and flexibility in life situations that would normally trigger the opposite reactions.
